the use of negative space in these Raymond Chandler covers are very effective. The small banner image at the top shows very little, a thumb and the bottom of a mans chin, half of a woman’s face, three floors of an apartment building and the rim of a glass, leaving the rest up to the imagination of the reader. it’s intriguing and subtle and begs the question of what these books are about. the layering of the image and subsequent blocks of color and text draw the eye from top to bottom and gives the authors name pride of place directly in the eye-line of the reader.
